The Float Shoppe was founded by Dylan Schmidt and Sandra Calm – two Portland natives who are incredibly excited to have expanded the availability of floatation therapy in the city we love.
Dylan and Sandra’s vision for The Float Shoppe formed in January of 2011. As they left some of their first blissful float sessions, they shared a glance in which was written the plans for opening their own floatation center in Northwest Portland. Equally inspired by the power of our experiences of deep relaxation, renewal, and pain relief, they set out to create a dream space of a healing with floatation therapy at its core of offerings. A few months later, they gave a new name to the location of our dreams: The Float Shoppe, at 1515 NW 23rd Avenue.
Through the summer and into winter, the couple built a comfortable, inviting place with the help of our friends and family. Orange paint on walls, cool tiles on floors, a shipment of 3000 pounds of Epsom salt–and on December 14th, they gently opened our doors to the public. These now small business owners have had the absolute pleasure of meeting thousands of people who have come to experience the benefits of floating, massage, acupuncture and more. A now full team of staff delight in every person we see walk down the Float Shoppe stairs with their post-float glow and smile…or strut, in many cases. Clients leave refreshed, with a restored sense of optimism and confidence in their ability to create the life of their choosing.
“We truly feel that every person who comes here is like a guest in our home.” – Sandra Calm
Since opening, Dylan and Sandra have become leaders within the float industry. Dylan, Sandra and Emily were flown out to Tulsa OK to assist in setting up a new research facility at LIBR where new float research is progressing every day.
Dylan now hosts the Art of the Float Podcast which is designed to help others successfully start their own float centers.
In November of 2017, Dylan and Sandra welcomed their first child, which helped further inspire their work with families.
Seeing how far the Float Shoppe has come, appreciation is giving the originators of floatation therapy, from Dr. John C. Lilly and his originating work in the 1950s, to everyone who has conducted research and expanded knowledge of floatation therapy since his time. We appreciate the advice and encouragement we have received along the way, from each source who has shared with us, and we hope to offer the same to others in the future.

The float tank’s potential for healing and mindfulness is news that I’m really excited about, which is why I started volunteering here at the Float Shoppe in June of 2014. I now get to work here, sharing this special place and unique healing modalities with our community, both near and afar.
